The Highly Flammable Contents Of The Basement Rendered The Blaze An Exceptionally Hard One To Fight. The Caretaker, James Mcrae, And His Family Resided On The 3rd Floor. Scantily Clad, They Crawled Out On The Roof And Were Rescued By The Firefighters. Fire Halls 1,2,3,5, & 6 Respond To The Call. Great Precautions Were Taken To Keep Flames From Extending To Eatons Store Across The Street. Two Lines Of Hose Were Supplied By T. Eaton Co, While The Fire Was At Its Height. The Ederton Block Was Of Modern Construction And Was Considered Almost Fireproof. It Ws Built In 1906 And Valued At $140,000. Foote   Linotypist workers typing at their machines inside the composing room of the Canadian Publishers in the West Canada Publishers building in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The employees received a salary of $4 per week. The first machine in the photo was used to type set an English paper called the Northwest Review and the Labour News; the second machine was operated by Mr. George-Henre Berube who typeset the paper La Liberte and other French manuals; the third machine was used to print the German newspaper Western Canada; and the fourth machine was used to print a Polish paper. Standing at the right is Brother Charles Sylvestre, Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate, a machinist. Between machines 2 and 3 is the foreman, Maurice Dumousseau, who was later with the Free Press. At the back to the right is Mr. George McNally, A. LaLonde, and Edmon LeMay (second from the right). Foote   Scene of the murder of Police Constable Bernard Snowdon, Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Snowdon was the first member of the Winnipeg Police Department to be murdered on duty. He was shot in the back while patrolling Main Street. He was found in the rear of Rosenblatt's Store. The bullet entered his shoulder and down through the right side of his heart, killing him instantly.
